Public health surveillance revision and reporting basis data for AI

A published surveillance count can be revised as information arrives.

NAICS 923120 · Administration of Public Health Programs

A published surveillance count can be revised as information arrives. CDC describes the difference between provisional and finalized notifiable disease data. An agency can use fictitious counts to test whether software keeps reporting dates and status labels with the values it summarizes. CDC notifiable disease data notes

Build a dummy weekly table with counts of 14 and 17 in two publication vintages. Add a table for a different geographic grouping. Ask which published figure the model should use for the requested view and how to label the remaining uncertainty. Score vintage, geography and provisional status separately.

Use synthetic aggregates. Exclude case reports, addresses, health histories and small-cell information. Keep interpretation for actual public health decisions with qualified staff.

Describe an original reporting revision exercise

Original Fiund exercise

A reporting vintage changes the published count without creating a finalized series

Invented weekly aggregates have generic geographic labels and no disease or person information. The exercise tests reporting provenance, not public-health interpretation.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
PH1Week W vintage V1Region A count 14, labeled provisional.
PH2Week W vintage V2Region A count revised to 17, still provisional; explicitly replaces V1 for current-view reporting.
PH3Other geography tableRegion A+B combined count 25 in V2, provisional. No finalized Week W record supplied.

Question for the model

Which value and status should a current Region A view use, and can the combined table or revision be called a finalized A count?

Show the reference answer and checks

PH2 explicitly supports 17 for the current Region A view of Week W, retaining its provisional status. PH1 remains the historical V1 publication of 14. PH3 covers A+B rather than A alone and cannot replace the A figure. A revised count is not automatically finalized; the packet supplies no final record. Preserve vintage, geography and status instead of implying a verified final trend or cause.

  • Dropping provisional status after a numerical revision.
  • Using a combined geographic total for a single-region request.

Fields to preserve

Week and publication vintage
Separates the event period from later reporting updates.
Geographic grouping
Defines the count's coverage.
Provisional versus finalized status
Preserves uncertainty through revisions.

Test another case

Ask what was published in V1, then add a final V3 for another week only. Require the historical and week-specific status checks to remain separate.

Use synthetic aggregates only. Exclude case reports, addresses, health histories, identifying small cells and actual public-health decisions.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
