NAICS 325910 · Printing Ink Manufacturing

The International Color Consortium publishes color-management resources. An ink manufacturer can define an original task around matching a printed comparison to the recorded substrate, reference and product version. ICC color-management resources

Create a self-authored geometric print target, fictional ink-lot tickets and a mock press-condition sheet. Print paper examples or use original digital mockups with their status explicit. Ask the assistant which comparison uses the specified substrate and reference. Include a product-family card beside a lot-specific observation and a proof from a different substrate with a similar appearance.

Annotate ink lot, substrate, reference identifier, observation type and product revision. Hold out an unfamiliar target layout for evaluation. Score wrong-substrate matching, general information used as lot evidence and unsupported comparisons across observation types independently. The key should describe the recorded relationship without inventing a cause for a color difference.

Use original targets and invented process references. Licensed color standards, customer artwork, proprietary formulations and laboratory exports need appropriate authority. A licensing brief should state the context-selection task and independent review. Establish the buyer's capture and reference requirements before preparing a larger ink archive or commissioning additional production material.

Original Fiund exercise

Same ink lot, different substrate finish

An original geometric target is printed or drawn on owned paper props. Values are labels for a controlled comparison, not a real press setup.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
1Requested viewLot I8 on uncoated stock under setup A.
2Target 1I8 on coated stock under A; reference marks visible.
3Target 2I8 on uncoated stock under A; reference marks visible.

Question for the model

Which target should be selected?

Show the reference answer and checks

Select target 2 because record 3 matches the ink lot, stock and setup in record 1. Target 1 matches the lot and setup but differs in stock. A visual difference across those targets cannot by itself establish a change in ink lot.

  • Attributing a substrate effect to ink formulation
  • Ignoring an uncoated-versus-coated mismatch

Fields to preserve

ink_lot
Identifies the represented material
stock_finish
Separates print contexts
reference_mark_visible
Confirms that alignment cues are present

Test another case

Use matching stock and ink with different reference-mark scales; normalize alignment before comparing the target.

No customer art, press operating parameters, ink recipes or production specifications.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
