Photographic, plate and toner materials cover several products, so a dataset should identify the exact article and observation. The Census manual defines the category. An original toner-print exercise can focus on the relationship between material lot, reference target and recorded observation. Census imaging-material scope

Create a self-authored grayscale target, fictional material tickets and a mock device-setting register. Give two print observations different material-lot references. Ask the assistant which observation answers the selected request and which lacks the reference-target version. Include a device-maintenance note recorded after the earlier observation, so chronology must remain explicit.

Annotate material, lot, device reference, target version, observation time and source scope. Hold out a new target arrangement for evaluation. Score wrong-lot matching, use of a later event as earlier evidence and unsupported comparison between targets independently. The key should identify the documented context without diagnosing a material or device from appearance alone.

Use original targets and invented settings, with no photographic chemistry required. Customer images, licensed test charts, proprietary material recipes and laboratory documents need source-specific authority. A licensing brief should identify the context-review task and independent key. Confirm buyer requirements before preparing a larger archive.

Original Fiund exercise

A gray step belongs to the capture configuration

An owned grayscale target is captured twice under fictional device presets. There is no claim about material sensitivity.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
1Capture protocolUse preset M1 and lot L2 for the comparison.
2Frame AL2 image under M2; dark step appears lighter.
3Frame BL2 image under M1; target and white reference both visible.

Question for the model

Which frame qualifies and what can it show?

Show the reference answer and checks

B matches both specified keys in records 1 and 3 and includes a visible reference. A can be retained as M2 evidence, but the different preset in record 2 prevents attributing its lighter step to material variation in this comparison.

  • Comparing grayscale values across presets
  • Using a lot match to ignore capture conditions

Fields to preserve

material_lot
Identifies the specimen batch
capture_preset
Defines comparable imaging setup
reference_visibility
Flags frames without the required target context

Test another case

Provide two M1 frames with different white reference positions; require correct alignment before comparing steps.

No proprietary imaging chemistry, device settings beyond mock names or calibration claims.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
