Plastic bottle neck-finish data for testing AI inspection
A bottle cap that looks compatible from above may still fit poorly.

A bottle cap that looks compatible from above may still fit poorly. A neck-finish sample helps a buyer test whether a vision system distinguishes thread damage from a surface scuff and asks for measurements when it cannot see the relevant feature. NIST’s manufacturing vision work covers localized defect segmentation. Bottle-specific acceptance is a proposed application to validate with the buyer. NIST manufacturing defect segmentation
Use unbranded empty bottles with a known finish dimension, a supervised gauge reading, and top and side photos at fixed angles. Give one otherwise identical bottle a visually distracting body scuff while keeping a confirmed acceptable neck. On a different bottle, pair an ambiguous photo with an out-of-range inspection reading. Separate neck geometry, cosmetic state, and evidence available. This allows a reviewer to measure the model’s ability to decline a visual-only pass.
Bottle geometry, tooling data, and customer fill specifications may be contract-restricted. Prepare a neutral training bottle and an invented specification before discussing production access.
Describe the bottle inspection dataset
Original Fiund exercise
A neck feature and a sidewall blemish use different evidence
An original bottle drawing supplies separate views and invented neck readings. The exercise does not infer closure compatibility.
| Record | Source | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Neck record | Sample B4 diameter reading 28.2 mm at marked neck plane. |
| 2 | Rotated side image | B4 shows a scuff below the shoulder; finish plane partly hidden. |
| 3 | Request | Provide observed finish dimension and cosmetic observation separately. |
Question for the model
How should the two observations be stored?
Show the reference answer and checks
Store 28.2 mm as the record 1 measurement at the marked neck plane and the scuff as a sidewall observation from record 2. The rotated image cannot replace the finish measurement, and neither item independently determines whether a closure fits or seals.
- Recording a sidewall scuff as a measured finish deviation
- Measuring diameter from a cropped oblique view
Fields to preserve
- finish_plane
- Identifies the measurement location
- view_orientation
- Controls what features are visible
- cosmetic_region
- Keeps shoulder and sidewall findings distinct
Test another case
Include a cap-obscured neck and a clear wall photo; allow the cosmetic label without a finish observation.
No commercial bottle drawings, actual fit tests, safety limits or packaging performance claims.
Discuss a contribution
Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
