Patent license scope records for AI review

A database reference may point to an instrument without revealing every right the parties agreed to.

A database reference may point to an instrument without revealing every right the parties agreed to. USPTO publishes assignment data and guidance on recording documents, including licenses. A licensor can test a model on an invented register that separates the asset, recorded instrument, and scope stated in the fictional contract. USPTO patent assignment dataset · USPTO recording context

Invent two practice patent aliases and a license with a defined field of use. Attach an amended scope to one alias and an unrelated recorded document to the other. Ask which source supports each statement and which term cannot be inferred from the public record. Score identity, version, permitted field, and uncertainty.

Use no undisclosed inventions, royalty reports, party details, deal negotiations, or licensed confidential material. Use dummy identifiers and original text. Keep legal interpretation with authorized professionals.

A recorded instrument reference does not reveal every license term

Dummy patent aliases and original contract excerpts support a scope-matching exercise. The packet contains no real invention, public patent document or legal opinion.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
PL1Fictional registerPatent alias P-A references instrument I1. P-B references I2; register contains no royalty or sublicense fields.
PL2Independent practice instrument I1P-A permission limited to field Orchard. Authorized amendment I1-A adds field Meadow for P-A only.
PL3Unrelated practice instrument I2P-B ownership assignment recorded; no field-of-use or sublicense clause supplied.

Question for the model

Which fields of use are explicitly documented for P-A, and what cannot be inferred about P-B or sublicensing from the register?

Show the reference answer and checks

PL2 explicitly documents Orchard and the authorized Meadow addition for P-A. PL1's reference alone is not the source of those terms; the instrument and amendment are. PL3 concerns an ownership assignment for P-B and supplies no permission in either field. None of the records establishes a sublicense right or royalty term. Preserve those unknowns rather than inferring them from registration or adjacent instruments.

  • Treating an ownership assignment as the same instrument type as a field-limited license.
  • Inferring sublicense permission or commercial terms from a register's document reference.

Fields to preserve

Asset-to-instrument relation
Identifies the source for each scope claim.
Instrument type and amendment coverage
Separates assignment from license and limits each change.
Express field and unprovided terms
Keeps missing rights from being implied.

Test another case

Add an amendment mentioning Meadow but naming P-B rather than P-A. Require asset-specific attribution despite the repeated field label.

Use invented identifiers and original excerpts. Exclude undisclosed inventions, royalties, party details, confidential licenses and negotiations. Legal interpretation stays with authorized professionals.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
