Narrow fabric data for AI repeat and width checks

Narrow fabrics and machine embroidery offer a visual task in which width, pattern repeat and edge condition can be observed separately. Cotton Incorporated's product evaluation laboratory describes textile testing capabilities. An original sample can pair measurements with the exact strip inspected. Make self-designed ribbon patterns and photograph them with a scale. Supply a fictional order card defining width and repeat for the exercise. One strip has the correct width but a skipped motif, while another has a correct motif sequence with its edge outside the frame. Ask the model to identify supported observations and the additional view needed for the cropped strip.

Annotate strip identifier, measurement location, repeat boundaries and occluded areas. Reserve a different motif family for evaluation. Score missing-repeat errors, unsupported width claims and wrong-strip associations separately. The reference key should distinguish a defect visible in the picture from conformity to a requirement stated in the order card.

Use original designs and neutral branding. Customer logos, licensed embroidery patterns and production-machine screens may carry separate rights. A commercial sample should specify whether the buyer needs visual inspection, order matching or both, and include independent measurement checks. The capture plan should follow that agreed task before more shop-floor material is collected.

A repeat measured along the ribbon

An original ribbon drawing has asymmetric leaf motifs. A tabletop photo and sketched crop map replace real patterns and customer artwork.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
N1Untrimmed image rulerLeft ribbon edge at 10 mm and right at 32 mm on the transverse ruler.
N2Long-axis crop mapLeaf tips at 15, 43 and 71 mm along the length; each tip corresponds to the same motif orientation.
N3Crop noticeA close-up clips both edges and shows only two tips.
N4Label requestProvide usable full-width and pitch labels with their measurement axis.

Question for the model

Which measurements should the annotation store?

Show the reference answer and checks

Record 22 mm across the ribbon from the two transverse edges in N1. Record 28 mm along the ribbon between corresponding leaf tips in N2; the next interval agrees. N3 cannot independently establish full width because both edges are cropped.

  • Reporting pitch as width
  • Measuring from leaf tip to stem and calling that a full repeat

Fields to preserve

measurement_axis
Keeps transverse width distinct from along-length pitch
landmark_type
Identifies matching points in neighboring repeats
edge_visibility
Marks crops that cannot support a width label

Test another case

Use an alternating leaf design where adjacent tips point opposite ways; the full repeat spans matching orientation landmarks.

Only include owned geometry and images; exclude branded ribbon, embroidery files and buyer templates.

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
