A rehearsal take can include a different phrase from the version a company is authorized to offer. The Copyright Office provides context for choreographic works. A company can demonstrate how it records movement boundaries and permissions using wholly original material. U.S. Copyright Office choreography guidance

Use two simple adult-only practice takes with separate identifiers. Mark the phrase’s range, performer authorization, version and the specific practice use. Leave one excerpt on hold because a required permission is missing. Ask which evidence supports each range and how the two takes differ. Use no external music.

Clear rights from choreographers, performers, videographers and location owners. Keep minors, real rehearsal schedules, third-party choreography, private footage and unapproved likenesses out.

Describe a consented practice movement sample

Original Fiund exercise

A rehearsal take's permitted range must follow the recorded phrase version

Two original adult-only movement phrases are represented by dummy timing cards. No actual choreography, external music, performer image or private rehearsal recording is included.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
DR1Practice take APhrase version P1 at 00:00–00:12; choreographer and performer practice-use U permissions documented for that range.
DR2Practice take BPhrase version P2 at 00:00–00:15; choreographer U permission recorded, performer permission pending.
DR3Excerpt requestRequests B at 00:03–00:10. A's release reference is attached, but it names take A/P1 only.

Question for the model

Which range is supported by the supplied U permissions, and can A's release clear the B/P2 excerpt?

Show the reference answer and checks

DR1 supports the stated U range for A/P1. DR2 gives B/P2 a separate version and a pending performer grant. DR3's attached A/P1 reference does not establish B's missing permission, even though its requested seconds fit inside A's allowed range. Preserve take identity, phrase version, range and each contributor's permission rather than clearing an excerpt by timing alone.

  • Applying a release to another take with the same start time.
  • Treating the choreographer's grant as the missing performer permission.

Fields to preserve

Take and phrase version
Disambiguates changed movement material.
Excerpt boundaries
Defines the requested recording range.
Contributor-specific use grant
Keeps choreography and performance authority separate.

Test another case

Add B's performer permission for seconds 0–5 only. Ask about the original 3–10 request to test partial-range overlap rather than a blanket take-level status.

Use original dummy records or separately cleared adult performances. Exclude minors, private schedules, third-party choreography, external music and unapproved likenesses.
