Two items can share a range name while the shade, package size and ingredient label differ. FDA publishes cosmetics labeling guidance. A beauty retailer can evaluate identification and source retrieval with original prop packaging. FDA cosmetics labeling guide

Create two dummy shade cards with adjacent codes and give one a revised label image. Take a photo under altered lighting and include a model that looks similar but lacks a readable code. Ask which variant the written sources support and when appearance alone is insufficient.

Use original artwork and inert containers. Exclude customers, preference profiles, branded samples without permission and internal formulas. Keep product safety advice outside the exercise.

Describe a mock shade identification sample

Original Fiund exercise

Lighting resemblance cannot identify a shade whose code is unreadable

Empty mock beauty containers use original shade and label codes. There is no real formula, customer preference, product claim or safety advice.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
CSL1Original shade registerRange R: shade S10 has label v1, shade S11 has approved v2. Both use the same container shape and size.
CSL2Package A photoReadable code S11 and v2 match the original register. Light differs from reference; reviewer does not use color alone as identity.
CSL3Package B photoLooks similar to A under altered light, but shade and revision codes unreadable. No matched source card supplied.

Question for the model

Which shade and label revision are supported for A, and can B be assigned the same identity from appearance?

Show the reference answer and checks

CSL1 and CSL2 support A's S11/v2 match through readable codes and the register, independently of altered lighting. CSL3 does not expose either needed field for B, so visual similarity cannot establish its shade or revision. Report B's unresolved code and request a clearer matched view or authoritative source. Keep observed appearance separate from documented identity, without inferring actual ingredients, product safety or suitability.

  • Matching shade by photographed color under different lighting.
  • Copying an approved label revision to a neighboring product whose code is unreadable.

Fields to preserve

Range, shade and package alias
Defines the variant.
Readable code and label version
Supports source matching.
Lighting and missing identifier
Preserves image limitations.

Test another case

Supply B's readable shade S10 but no revision. Require the shade to resolve while current label identity remains unverified.

Use owned empty props and original designs. Exclude shopper profiles, internal formulas and branded material without permission.
