A practice wall can look consistent until the pattern changes at a corner. The Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association describes masonry construction. Trade recording programs provide an adjacent intake route. A contractor can use an existing ground-level mock-up to demonstrate the visual evidence a reviewer needs. Use approved lightweight practice blocks and an independently drawn pattern. Give the model one correct observed orientation, a visually similar reversed unit, and an obstructed view. Ask it to identify the pattern location and cite the view that supports it. Use a qualified reviewer to validate the example and hold out another layout.

Keep customer plans, jobsite photos, worker identities and actual locations out of the sample. Do not demonstrate structural work or give installation approval through the benchmark.

Describe a masonry demonstration

Original Fiund exercise

Find the corner pattern without filling an obstructed view

Lightweight practice blocks form a tabletop corner with an independent pattern drawing. Painted dots indicate orientation; the task is visual attribution rather than installation approval.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
ML1Pattern drawing P2At corner position C1, the dot faces the triangle marker. At C2 it faces away.
ML2Identified image V1C1 and triangle visible; dot faces triangle. Reviewer confirms the position label.
ML3Images V2 and V3V2 names C2 and shows dot facing triangle. V3 names C3 but a card hides the dot.

Question for the model

Which observed position agrees with P2, which conflicts, and which orientation cannot be established?

Show the reference answer and checks

ML1 and ML2 support agreement at C1: the identified dot faces the triangle as drawn. At C2, ML3 shows a dot facing the triangle while P2 requires it to face away, so the records document an orientation conflict. C3's dot is hidden and its orientation remains unobserved. Do not turn that missing view into either agreement or a defect.

  • Labeling every similar-looking block correct without checking its pattern position.
  • Treating occlusion at C3 as evidence of the same orientation seen at C2.

Fields to preserve

Pattern position and revision
Defines the expected orientation for each location.
Visible orientation marker
Provides the observable basis of comparison.
View-specific occlusion
Retains an unknown rather than an invented result.

Test another case

Use a new pattern with the C1 and C2 orientations swapped. Test whether the model follows the held-out drawing instead of memorizing the original positions.

Use safe ground-level props and cleared drawings. Exclude structural work, actual sites, customer patterns, worker identities and project approval decisions.
