NHTSA's public VIN decoder describes information encoded in a vehicle identifier. A factory's own order-to-build history can support a different task, resolving which selected options were actually recorded for an individual unit. NHTSA identifier context

Create a fictional order with a roof option, seating package and market designation. Pair it with an executed build sheet and an option-change register. Ask which configuration was built. Include an order amendment approved after the unit's completion and a brochure for the same model family. The answer should preserve the difference between a customer request, a family description and the recorded unit.

Annotate order, unit, option code, market, effective change and completion event. Reserve another package combination for evaluation. Score a requested option treated as installed, future change backdated and model-family information extended to a unit independently. Each answer should identify the build-sheet field and event that establish the selected configuration.

Begin with self-authored records and neutral unit names. A commercial archive could contain customer information, licensed software, supplier terms or vehicle histories tied to people. Record authority for each proposed source and preserve the joins during permitted transformation. Define the exact configuration-review task and checked key with the buyer before preparing real records. This exercise does not certify a vehicle or establish a purchase offer.

Original Fiund exercise

The sales order and build manifest disagree on one option

An original mock order describes a paper vehicle model with invented market and package codes.

Fictional records supplied to the evaluator
RecordSourceWhat it records
1OrderRoof R2, seat package S4, market M1.
2Issued build ticketR2/S4/M1.
3Completed manifestR1/S4/M1 after an undocumented option difference.

Question for the model

Which options are confirmed and which needs follow-up?

Show the reference answer and checks

The seating and market fields agree across records 1–3. The roof in the completed manifest is R1 while the order and ticket specify R2. Record the roof discrepancy at build completion; there is no documented amendment that would make R1 the authorized order.

  • Treating the issued ticket as the as-built state
  • Masking one option mismatch under the matching package

Fields to preserve

option_role
Separates roof, seat and market fields
expected_build_value
Tracks order and issue context
completed_value
Preserves actual recorded outcome

Test another case

Include an order amendment after the issue ticket but before completion; compare to the effective customer request.

No customer or VIN data, vehicle safety, build processes or configuration advice.

Discuss a contribution

Describe the sources you control, the task they could support and what has already been checked. Use the existing-data assessment for an archive or the collection brief for a new recording project. The contributor agreement defines Fiund’s licensing authority and compensation. A guide or fictional exercise does not establish an accepted collection or a sale.
